The green, green grass of home...

These punny titles are a little stretched now! But this football changing room facilities are one of the greenest buildings I have ever worked on. The water supply to the building is pumped through a kilometer of pipes, in holes 100m deep, below the building, an earth heat exchange system, which results in water coming out of the ground at between 11 and 13 degrees Celsius. The water is then put through two refridgeration units, and the latent heat is then transferred to the water as it comes out of the ground for a second time, to eventually bring the temperature up to 40 degrees, a safe and warm showering temperature. The electricity within the building is provided by photovoltaic panels along the south face of the building, the other glazed panels also provide enough heat to warm the corridor that connects the changing rooms. The building has a grassed roof, which provides a greater insulation value than traditional roofs, and with such low energy costs, coupled with the potential to sell energy back to the national grid, it is estimated that the building will have paid for itself (approx £1.2 million) within 7 years.
