At the feet of my Mentor

In 1985 I changed schools and began to change the direction I was studying. I moved from computing to construction, and was taught by one of my most influential teachers, Hugh Curley. Hugh is an Architect, an Irish speaker, an ex-rally driver, and one of the best teachers I've ever had. I readily recall being spun around the countryside in his Audi 80 Quatro, being taken from project to project, all being built by himself and his brother a building contractor. Hugh inspired me to make a scale model of a Norman round tower, Reginald Tower, one of Waterfords outstanding landmarks. Hugh has always been the source of inspiration for my career, I always wanted to teach, to build and drive furiously around the countryside. Hugh gave me my first t-square, my first parallel motion drawing board and the source of joy I get in seeing a brick laid well upon another. He also designed many houses and homes in Waterford, and the above photo's pay very poor homage to his work on one of my friends house.
The glazed door panel was designed and made by another friend of ours, Paul White, and I played a small part in actually reviewing Hughs plans just prior to construction when Tommy and Linda asked me to look over them.
